I never put down a book after only 10 pages..I can't believe I wasted 0.99 on this book. While the writing style is OK, the author fails to sell the characters. Also, a little research would be in order. The President's loyal agents have infiltrated every agency except the Secret Service? Even the Defense Department has spies but not the Secret Service...hmmmm This may be a lead in to some type of Secret Service hero plot. Brilliant! The President's vision of an ancient temple sitting on the White House's spot was a bit too much for me... What a waste of time!Product details

The Last Election edition by Kevin Carrigan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
If this is Mr. Corrigan's first book, I can't wait to read the
second one. This was a nail biter from beginning to the end.
An enjoyable read with a challenging plot and "authentic " characters. At times I couldn't put it down.
Well researched and detailed with realistic sub plots. Timing throughout the novel was important and realistic. I enjoyed the story and the read.
Even though the story is set around the 2012 election and the Maya doomsday prophecy, The Last Election is not a political or philosophical commentary. If you are looking for a deep read, this book is not for you, but if you enjoy reading a book purely for its entertainment value, The Last Election provides plenty of it. I found this to be a fun book with sympathetic characters, many villains to hate, and everything in between. The author uses these characters to weave the reader through some interesting, surprising, and action-filled plot twists. I will not recap the plot, as other reviewers have already done so, but I will recommend this book for readers who enjoy action/adventure stories with a little paranormal thrown in for good measure. (Purchased July 2011. Reviewed 4-22-12.)
Whether it is the title of the book, the supposed end of the Mayan calendar or the superstition surrounding the Mayan culture, this is a great mystery read.
Once again a rogue President, with the assistance of assassins and fixers try to control the US and ultimately the World.
Is this the END
I read this several months ago, and that this story is still so fresh in my head says a great deal about how much I loved this book. This was a great political thriller with a bit of a paranormal twist.
Just as the title states, the events in this story centers around the final presidential election in the United States before the alleged end time of 2012. There is a lot of action and parts of it almost had an Indiana Jones feel, with archeology and ancient prophecies and mysteries. The plot was wonderful, but I really felt like the characters drove this story.
I freely admit that when I read a book heavy in politics I find myself trying to figure out the political leanings of the author. I know it doesn't really matter but I still do it, and many times I can peg a definite lean one way or another. Mr. Carrigan, however, did not let anything show. The story was a very good example of the impartial narrarator.
There were interesting back-stories for most of the characters, and I did have to re-read passages a few times to commit the deatails to memory. That might be due to my personal problem with names, but I did feel there was a bit too much information given in chunks at times. Even so, I did like the back-stories because I enjoy knowing about the 'why' behind actions.
The ending was not what I was expecting, which I count as a good thing. I won't spoil the party, but I will say that this book is not the typical 'end of the world' story.
Five stars from me, and recommended for anyone that enjoys a well written and unique political thriller. If there is a follow-up I will absolutely be buying.
Bizarre. Seriously, what other word can you think of for this?
A president that has a private network that is more violent than any known organization and more widespread than the girl scouts.
A challenger that is beloved by the people but dies in a massive explosion in chapter 2
A race riot that decimates the state of Michgan
And oh yeah, that president? He's obsessed with the Mayan calendar and convinced that he is the supreme being of the world.
It was an interesting read, and I finished the book, but through the entire last third of it just kep thinking "you MUST be kidding me!"
I love syfy thrillers or supernatural books and movies like "Children of Men". This story has that feel for me. It's got a realistic story line about a power hunger leader that tries to eliminate the competition. Turn on the TV and you'll see that story played out all over the world. For the U.S., I think it works as a cautionary tale about what can happen if the citizens of all parties don't remain diligent and challenge the leaders. But more than that it's just great fun and escapism. Not everything has to be sooo realistic. A little fantasy is good to help us relax and forget our real life for a bit. I would love for the syfy channel to pick this up. It would be perfect for them.
