This is Colum McCann's first novel, now available for the first time in audio. With unreliable memories and scraps of photographs as his only clues, Conor Lyons follows in the tracks of his father, a rootless photographer, as he moved from war-torn Spain, to the barren plains of Mexico, where he met and married Conor's mother, to the American West, and finally back to Ireland, where the marriage and the story reach their heartrending climax. As the narratives of Conor's quest and his parents' lives twine and untwine, Colum McCann creates a mesmerizing evocation of the gulf between memory and imagination, love and loss, past and present.

I dont know but is something about people writing about Ireland and South America which tends to encourage them to paint the stereotypes; the south american (Mexican in this case) ladies with magical powers; the slow drunken Irishmen spending their days in the bar. I have really liked his other books, despite their unusual settings (high wire walker or tunnel digger) but somehow this one doesnt really get much beyond Isabel Allende with the spirited beauty won over by the misfit, the foul mouthed, even if soft-hearted and loving, Irish photographer. The story of this relationship is told by the son, reconstructed from bits he has learned, some limited writings made and the few remaining photographs, during a rare visit back to see his father and try and come to terms finally with the disappearance of his mother. The book is well constructed but the story slow and the disappointment and failure of the father to be recognised for his work and the son in finding his mother is very predictable. But the character of the father is well drawn and there are some nice cameo roles for the beat poet forest fire spotter and other characters that form part og the mother's story. Altogether its readable but not my favorite Colum McCann novel.

Songdogs (Audible Audio Edition) Colum McCann Paul Nugent Audible Studios Books Reviews

Another haunting and beautiful story from this masterful writer who takes on an unlikely tale of an unexpected reunion and reconciliation between father and son. Their uneasy relationship unfolds with grit and grace, and their emotions, though subtly understated, are instantly recognizable and unerringly portrayed.
This is not Colum's best book, but it will serve those who like explorations of family, memory, and loss. His other books are better.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Colum McCann's writing is wonderful and this story
held my interest throughout. I have more of his books and know that I will enjoy them
as well.
Beautiful written with the innocence of childhood and painful reality of adulthood . Moves a bit slow w but so do most of his books. Probably because you don't want to miss the poetry of his writing.
Like an aphrodisiac of old, starts subtly and grows in your nerves & bones, one's psyche as it were, until the emotions become total, encapsulating & all the rest of one's true life just a little removed from the absolute of the story Mr. McCann is telling.
Reconnecting, if that is what they do, between father and son. Beautifully written and heartfelt. The coldness of earlier years
melts (somewhat) with the father's advanced age.
I love the writing of Colum McCann. Each sentence is finely crafted with distinctive adjectives and metaphors. As his first novel, Songdogs is still strong. A novel of internal narrative, with unforgettable characters. McCann etches each character with eloquence into your own internal narrative.
